Concert Review: charlieonnafriday at Vinyl in Atlanta, GA

By Thomas Livingston

Last Thursday night, August 22nd, charlieonnafriday made his Atlanta appearance at Vinyl/Center Stage for his debut headlining tour entitled “The Onnafriday Tour.” He promoted his new album, Wild Child, which just so happened to be released the night of his Atlanta performance. His fans’ anticipation for this album drop was very apparent within the general atmosphere of the concert as I heard excited chatter before the concert began.

Charlie’s performance was full of energy as he performed his explosive tracks about love, youth, and the simple idea of enjoying oneself. Though the concert started with plentiful vibrance, the set moved to a more mellow atmosphere towards the show’s midpoint. During this slower section, Charlie performed his more relaxed songs, recounting stories of his eventful, and sometimes reckless, youth, as well as his journey to success as a musician in between songs. Eventually, the fire returned as he played more of his high-energy and crowd-pleasing tracks, finishing with an encore performance of his most popular song, “Enough.”

Charlie’s deep gratitude and loving relationship with his fan base remained abundantly apparent throughout his entire set. From bringing fans onstage to going on several heartfelt tangents about his deep appreciation for them, it was overwhelmingly clear that Charlie does not take his supporters for granted. Even while previewing his brand new, unreleased tracks, the crowd displayed tremendous engagement, acting as though they had already been platinum hits.

Not only was there a wonderful relationship between fans and the artist, but also between the fans themselves. Throughout the night, I witnessed and participated in countless overwhelmingly friendly conversations with fans in the venue. Though I am, in complete transparency, mostly an outsider to Charlie’s music, the energy emanating around the room and the overall loving atmosphere made for quite an enjoyable Thursday night of music.
