October at WUOG: Birthoween, Live in the Lobby, and More!

By William Sealy

October is truly WUOG’s month.  Last month we had many fun celebrations, including College Radio Day, our CD Sale, and most importantly our 52nd birthday! This Birthoween we had Elephant 6’s legendary band, Elf Power play for us. Opening was local band Honeypuppy, and many of their members are actually WUOG alums and spoke briefly about their time in the organization.

Everyone felt the Halloween spirit, even Elf Power, as they purposely picked songs from their discography that fit the season, like a cover of Brian Eno’s “Needle in the Camel Eye,” while Honeypuppy played songs about serial killers. The audience was covered head to toe in costumes, from vampires and ghouls, to Marios and Lugis. Everyone got the message. There was more than just live music, as we set up many arts and crafts stations, like zine making, along with a costume contest!

There were people of all ages present at this Birthoween, all gathered to celebrate WUOG. There were a few kids running around having fun, as their parents either pursued in chase, playing along, or they stood enchanted by the bands. While a hoard of college kids danced along to the music.

We did so much more than just Birthoween of course this month. We had our CD sale, where we decluttered, and put all the proceeds to charity. This year we raised 250 dollars to Project Safe, an organization dedicated to preventing sexual assault. We also had a fun karaoke event, where we sang our hearts out.

On top of all these events, we had our usual Live in the Lobbies, every Tuesday. This month we had Wieuca, Turtle Grenade, Floral Portrait, and the Howdies! Wieuca is a post-hardcore band with lots of personality, as they replaced all of their many curse words with words like crap, poop, which got many cheap laughs from the audience. On top of this they had a recorder solo. And in between songs the frontman, Will Ingram, transformed into “Radio Jones” who would play with his soundboard while rambling nonsense.

October has been an exciting and fun month for WUOG, despite midterms exams. As this semester begins to wrap up, we look forward to seeing our 53rd Birthday next year!
