This is Matt Ryan blogging live from Sanford Stadium. Today at noon the Georgia Bulldogs take on the 12th ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. The Bulldogs are coming off a tough loss at Columbia last week to the Gamecocks and look to rebound today against Arkansas. Arkansas is led by quarterback Ryan Mallet who is arguably the best quarterback in the country and the potential #1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. This is Arkansas’s first conference game of the year. Yesterday the NCAA ruled that A.J. Green will be ineligible for his full four game suspension, which is not good news for the Dawgs. The Dawgs will need a different play maker to step up today. Georgia won last year’s game in Fayetteville 52-41 and this year’s game is sure to feature some offensive firepower again. Kickoff is 16 minutes away! (more…)

Good Evening from Stegeman Coliseum, I’m Matt Ryan and I’ll be updating you throughout tonights game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the #3 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. The 13-14 Dawgs look to win their last home game of the season and get back to the .500 mark. Kentucky is looking to regain momentum heading into the month of March after losing at Tennessee last Saturday. The Coliseum is packed tonight with lots of fans sporting both red and black, as well as blue and white. Tonight also marks the final home game for seniors Albert Jackson, Ricky McPhee, and Tyler Whatley. On the other side of the court, the Kentucky Wildcats are talented team loaded with NBA potential and are led by John Wall, arguably the biggest name in college basketball. Although, Wall has attracted most of the attention for this game, the front court duo of DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson is equally important for Kentucky’s game plan and both will pose challenges for the Dawgs tonight in the paint. An interesting match up to watch tonight is the super athletic Travis Leslie against Kentucky’s three guard lineup, which could pose problems for Darius Miller and Eric Bledsoe defensively at times..  Tip off is only moments away. This sold out game will have a football like atmosphere tonight.

Here’s tonights starting lineup

Georgia Bulldogs

F – 1 – Travis Leslie
F – 25 – Tyler Whatley
C – 34 – Albert Jackson
G -10 – Ricky McPhee
G- 3 – Dustin Ware

Kentucky Widlcats

F – 15 – DeMarcus Cousins
F – 54 – Patrick Patterson
G – 1 – Darius Miller
G -11 – John Wall
G – 24 – Eric Bledsoe

Game Overview

It was a disappointing second half for the Dawgs after keeping it within four points after the first 20 minutes.  Jeremy Price had a great game with 19 points and Ricky McPhee scored 4 three pointers in his final game at the Stegeman Coliseum. Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie shot a combined 8-26, which kept the Dawgs from cutting down the Kentucky lead in the 2nd half that reached as high as 19 during the game. John Wall had another stellar performance for the Wildcats with 24 points and 3 steals to go along Patrick Patterson’s 17 points. Georgia will close out the regular season this Saturday at LSU and the SEC tournament begins next Thursday in Nashville.  I’m Matt Ryan, thank you for following my blog tonight on WUOG.org .

Georgia vs. Georgia Tech Live Blog:

Tonight the Georgia Bulldogs Mens Basketball team resumes play against the 17th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs went 7-1 during their first eight home games and look to beat their first ranked opponent of the season. UGA lost their last game on January 2nd at the University of Missouri and look to rebound tonight against the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech has received a lot of attention for their famed freshman forward Derrick Favors, a player who could be the top pick in this year’s NBA draft. However, another freshman to keep an eye on is Mfon Udofia. He’s been a big time scorer for the Yellow Jackets so far, but he’s very prone to turning the ball over. The Dawgs will need a big game form Trey Thompkins tonight against the dominant Tech frontcourt, after he only scored nine points in his last game. The arena is nowhere near full capacity and I see very little gold and blue, I guess a lot of Tech fans are more concerned about the Orange Bowl tonight. (more…)

Oct 03 2009 3:45 pm

Matt Ryan here blogging live at Sanford Stadium on this Saturday afternoon in Athens, Georgia. It’s hot and sunny today, so the weather won’t be as horrific as it was last week. Today the 18th ranked Georgia Bulldogs take on the 4th ranked LSU Tigers between the hedges. Georgia beat Arizona State last Saturday on a game winning field and the 4-0 Tigers are coming off a close game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs which they won 30-26 on a goal line stand. Les Miles is 0-2 against Georgia during his tenure at Baton Rouge and looks for his first win today against Mark Richt. LSU is last in the SEC in offensive yards and will need to improve on that side of the ball to compete with the Dawgs. Georgia’s secondary finally stepped up last week to limit the Sun Devils to 116 passing yards, but committed 3 turnovers which has been a problem for them in their first four games. One key matchup to look out for today is wide receiver A.J. Green vs. LSU defensive back Patrick Petterson. LSU has won the coin toss and the game is about to begin. (more…)

My (one week late) 2009 NFL Picks

After an exciting first week of the new NFL season that included Adrian Peterson’s three touchdown performance against the Cleveland Browns and Brandon Stokley’s miracle last second touchdown to beat the Cincinnati Bengals (sorry the state of Ohio it was a tough weekend on the Gridiron with the Trojans in Columbus), I realized I forgot to post my picks for the upcoming season. My picks below have not been changed after the first week despite injuries to key players on some of my playoff teams such as Donovan McNabb and Troy Polamalu. (more…)

The Arizona Cardinals are the underdog, not Cinderella.

Posted by: mattryan
Jan 26 2009 1:28 pm

The cliché “Cinderella team” is used too often in sports to describe a team that surprises many people by their success or come from behind efforts. George Mason during the 2006 Final Four and the Tampa Bay Rays in last October’s World Series are teams that have received this tag in recent years. It is hard to believe that only four weeks the Cardinals were underdogs at home against the Atlanta Falcons going in to Wild Card weekend; they are far from a team that came out of the middle of nowhere and go deep in the playoffs. While their success has been unexpected, it is far from a historic run. After all the Cardinals were 7-3 at one point during the season and were seen as a potential Super Bowl dark horse. They have a high scoring offense lead by MVP candidate Kurt Warner, two Pro Bowl receivers in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, in addition to four time Pro Bowl running back Edgerrin James. They won their first division title since 1975, at that time they were playing in St.Louis at Busch Stadium.

Their 9-7 seemed unconvincing after they won 2 of their last 6 regular season games, including a 48-20 loss on Thanksgiving in Philadelphia and a 47-7 beating from the New England Patriots during a snowy Week 16 game in Foxborough. Even after their 30-24 win against the Falcons for only their third playoff win in franchise history, their chances seemed dim at winning again for this season. They won their next game 33-13 in Charlotte against the Panthers, after surrendering a touchdown to Panthers running back Deangelo Williams on the game’s the opening drive. They scored 24 points in the first half of the NFC title game against Philadelphia, including 3 touchdowns from Larry Fitzgerald. While the offense lit up the score board early, they almost blew an 18 point halftime lead to the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Warner was able to lead his team back from 25-24 deficit and in doing so the Cardinals became the first 9-7 team to make the Big Game since the 1979 Los Angeles Rams. Those Rams lost 31-19 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIV. That same franchise will be the Cardinal’s opponent this Sunday. The Pittsburgh Steelers are a 7 point favorite and their will likely be more Terrible Towels in Raymond James Stadium than red and white. However, no doubt should be given to the Cardinals based on their success in the last three games. In their three playoff wins the Cardinals showed how potent their offense can be, but they also proved their dense won’t be a hindrance on their Super Bowl chances.

Pittsburgh showed during their first 18 games why their favored by a touchdown. They still have 15 starters from their team that won the Super Bowl three years ago. Their defense led by defensive player of the year James Harrison and All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu led the league in countless defensive categories, and is clearly a level above the Cardinal’s defense. It’s also being raved as possibly the best Pittsburgh defense ever. They will likely give Kurt Warner problems all day, but I have a hard time comparing them to the 1970’s version Steel Curtain that had four Hall of Fame players. However the defense is on par to teams that won recent Super Bowls with strong defenses such as the 2000 Baltimore Ravens and 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A “Cinderella” team gets by on luck, some lackluster play from their favored opponents, and is still viewed as having no chance heading in to their next game. Going in to last year’s Super Bowl the New York Giants were seen as a team that filled that description. The 18-0 New England Patriots were 12 points favorites and there was little doubt they would become the first unbeaten NFL team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins. New York upset Tom Brady’s team 17-14, in what may be the biggest upset in Super Bowl history. It completed a run of “Cinderella” proportions because they beat a team that was being hyped as the best ever. That was similar to North Carolina State beating Houston’s Phi Slama Jama team in the 1983 Final Four or the Texas Longhorns beating the USC Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl. If the Cardinals win Sunday it will only be an upset from the perspective of the greater Pittsburgh area and the odds makers, not in the context of David vs. Goliath.
