UGA vs Auburn Live Blog
IN THE END: Thanks for tuning in. Hope it was insightful and don’t forget to follow me on twitter at @benjammin_uga for more analysis on all sports. The Dawgs will now go on to face Kentucky next week to secure the SEC East. Have a good night everybody!!!
UGA BALL: They started this possession with 2:22 left on the clock and got Hudson Mason and Ken Malcome some playing time. They ran out the clock and UGA gets the victory. UGA 45- Auburn 7 And the Crowd goes while cheering UGA.
AUB BALL: They were basically just trying to be productive while the clock runs down. They had some solid plays and UGA’s defense is playing well still, but notably in cruise control. Sanders Cummings actually made a really nice play on a thrown up ball. But, Auburn went for it on fourth and Abry Jones got another sack. UGA has owned this game.
UGA 45- AUB 7
UGA DRIVE CONTINUES: Well, Crowell. He had consistent runs this drive and capped it off with a very nice TD running left. He still looks like the next great UGA RB. INTERESTING STAT: UGA has scored 15 TD the past 2 games, by 13 different players, and Michael Bennett is the only one to score 2 times.
UGA BALL: Auburn’s offense stalled leading to another punt. UGA came out running the ball again, getting Thomas some well deserved carries, and carries to Crowell to get the fumble out of his head. Brandon Harton even got into the game for mop up duty. Interesting Fact: This is the first game since 2009 that UGA has had 2 RB’s with 100 yards.
Start of 4th Quarter: UGA Still Driving: The first play is a fumble from Crowell. It is beginning to look like a trend for him rather than just random mistakes. He can’t do that in tighter games or it could cost UGA in the future. But ITS AUB BALL: UGA’s defense is still getting it done though, despite having the victory almost sealed. Moseley is still getting pressured and sacked. UGA is still hitting hard and the crowd is still in it, loud, and not leaving.
UGA BALL: The drive started out with some solid runs by Crowell. Then after an injury timeout, Crowell continued his work with more positive runs. UGA is doing a great job of maintaining possession to run out the clock. END OF 3rd QUARTER
AUB BALL: The UGA crowd is still loud as ever. But, a big pass play from Moseley gave the War Eagles hope. But, a fumble by AUB and a recovery from Mike Gilliard has given UGA the ball again. The defense keeps piling on with sacks, pressure, and turnovers. If you didn’t believe in UGA’s defense before, believe in it now. (Except for Trick Plays)
UGA BALL: Well, Murray got upended on that first down play and gave all the UGA fans a cringe-and-scare moment. But, UGA is doing well by feeding Carlton Thomas the ball. He is making big plays with quickness and even putting his head down, despite his 5-7 frame. It was good to see Crowell contributing as well, despite his average first half. He mad several big, double digit runs, showing UGA fans and coaches, “Hey, I am still here.” It looks like a sort of competition with Thomas could be benefiting Crowell, forcing greater effort from him. There is no doubt he is the more talented back, but must prove he can play with heart every down. Either way, UGA comes away with a FG by Brandon Bogotay (not Blair Walsh, who has been struggling. UGA 38- AUB 7
AUB BALL: Besides one good run by Michael Dyer, Auburn’s offense remains stagnant. UGA is getting great pressure still, even after the break. Sanders Cummings dropped a for sure pick 6, but with the lead, nobody is worried. UGA should keep the pedal to the metal on offense though, and increase the lead through the 3rd quarter.
Second Half Begins: It is now night time in Athens as AUB gets set to return the ball
HALFTIME ANALYSIS: UGA held AUB to negative 12 yards rushing in the first half and 89 yards total. This is by far the best performance by the entire UGA team all year. Auburn is getting kicked around. They had something for about one drive with Lutzenkirchen, but that ended quickly. UGA has been lucky not to turn the ball over more, but Murray has been locked in passing. He has had only one bad pass that got tipped. Besides that, Murray is showing how much he has progressed this year and how he can make the pro throws. He has been keen on the back shoulder pass all game, which is arguably one of the hardest to be good at. Carlton Thomas has stepped up this game in spite of another mediocre performance be Crowell. All of the recievers are getting involved, but the standout is Malcolm Mitchell. He is a future award winning WR. And, with a developing Chris Conley on the other side, UGA looks good at the WR position for a while. Auburn’s secondary is living up to what they were supposed to be, terrible. But, I will be interested to see what AUB’s coach Gene Chizik does to try and get back in the game. I also wonder if circumstances don’t change, do we see Richt take out the starters. I doubt it, but injury is risky. The crowd has been a major factor so far. This is the loudest I have ever heard Sanford Stadium. The closest in my time at UGA was South Carolina earlier this year. But, everyone is pumped, and the AUB fans are quiet. In the second half, I am going to try a different approach to this live blog. Expect less play by play and more analysis. STAY TUNED. And, I will end my analysis with one word to describe this half : DOMINATION
AUB Ball: UGA defense comes up big again, stopping AUB with John Jenkins getting a sack on 3rd down and causing an incomplete pass on 4th, giving UGA the ball with 29 seconds left on their own 45. UGA BALL: UGA is going for it despite the large lead. Murray scrambles to the UGA 42 for a first down with 22 seconds left. Murray tries to scramble again, but no gain with 10 seconds left. Timeout UGA. Murray sacked, UGA heads to the locker room with the 4 touchdown lead.
UGA Ball: Penalties nullify a chance for the Dawgs to do anything and give it back to AUB with 1:23 left in the half
AUB BALL: They begin their drive with just under 5 minutes to go. UGA’s defense is coming up big again. THE CROWD IS LOUD. AUB goes three and out, losing yards on the drive. Interesting Stat: AUBURN has Negative yards in the second quarter...My Reaction: UGA DOMINATION as the sun begins to set behind the stadium
UGA Ball: UGA begins the drive with another back shoulder bomb, this time to King. Crowell back in the game gets a double digit run for another UGA first down. UGA on AUB 19. After a holding penalty, 5 yard gain for Thomas on the ground, 3rd and 10. TOUCHDOWN: Murray gets another back shoulder throw to Mitchell, who makes a move and gets in for the UGA Score. UGA 35- AUB 7….INTERESTING STAT: UGA is 7 out of 7 on 3rd down so far…..My Reaction: It is just clicking for UGA. Murray is making PRO-LIKE back shoulder throws to his wide receivers, showing the hard work they have been putting in to get in tune with each other. Third down has been UGA’s down this game. Murray is giving his best performance of his career so far.
AUB BALL: UGA received an unsportsman penalty, giving AUB starting field position near the 40 yard line. AUB goes 3 and out as Jarvis Jones and Christian Robinson get in the backfield on 3rd down for a sack. CORRECTION: Bicarri has 7 interceptions on the year….Reaction: UGA’s defense has come to play and are dictating the AUB offense.
AUB BALL: UGA creates another short kick return for AUB with excellent special teams play. THE CROWD IS LOUD and UGA’s players are pumped, and have the momentum. Dyer with a 4 yard run to the left. UGA gets pressure causing Moseley to throw one away, 3rd down. TURNOVER AND TOUCHDOWN: UGA’s Bacarri Rambo with the Interception and TD. Extra Point good. UGA 28- AUB 7: Rambo’s 24 yard interception for a TD is UGA’s first defensive touchdown of the year. UGA is the last SEC team to do this……My Reaction: Bacarri is known for taking risks, and he took a big one there and jumped the pass for the TD. The crowd is now really into it, making it difficult to communicate for AUB. Grantham has the defense ready now, stopping runs, getting pressure, and causing turnovers. Bacarri now has 8 interceptions on the year.
AUB BALL: Well, first play is a bad handoff and an AUB (Dyer) TURNOVER: UGA recovers. UGA’s Thomas runs to the right for a one yard gane. Murray throws a WR screen to Malcolm Mitchell, who takes it to the AUB 23 yard line for a 1st down. Murray tries to fit one in to Bennett, but throws behind and almost intercepted by AUB. 3rd and 11, Murray scrambles right for 13 yards and a first down. Penalty sets UGA with a 1st and 15. TOUCHDOWN: Murray makes a 15 yard pass to Bruce Figgins for the TD. This Touchdown gives Murray the record for the most TD in one season by a UGA QB (6 plays, 40 yards, 2:33)My Reaction: They were lucky to get away with Crowell’s fumble by an AUB turnover. Murray is on today though, making a huge scramble to give UGA a chance for the TD. Congrats to Murray on the Record. UGA 21- AUB 7
UGA Ball: After gaining nothing on the first down play, Carlton Thomas runs the ball left for a huge 30 yard + gain. Then, Thomas makes another 1st down run gaining double digit yards. TURNOVER: With Crowell in the game, UGA runs it again, and Crowell fumbles it. AUB recovers and will start the drive on their own 45 yard line. My Reaction: Turnovers and dumb mistakes will cost the dawgs the game if it becomes a habit. Crowell has been way less effective than Thomas so far, due to AUB loading the box against Crowell, then backing off for Thomas, more know for his screen pass abilities.
Beginning of Second Quarter: UGA’s Branden Smith fair catches the 45 yard punt, and fell to the ground making sure he did not fumble. I will be updating at changes in possession or Media timeouts from now on, STAY TUNED!!!
AUB Second Drive: 22 yard return ended by a huge hit that had the whole crowed going “WOW.” AUB gains 8 on a pass. Moseley throws one away, 3rd and 2. Crowd is very loud and causes AUB to use a timeout, which made the crowd even louder. AUB comes out of the TO in a tight formation, rolls right, and completes a 14 yard pass for a first down. McCalebb runs one up the middle but called back by a penalty. UGA’s defensive end Abry Jones gets the sack, making it 2 and 21 for AUB. UGA’s Boykin hurt on the play. 1:07 left in the first quarter. AUB throws a screen pass to McCalebb making it 3rd and 8. THE CROWD IS LOUD, and causes another timeout. AUB come out of the TO with 3 WR, tries to sneak a run up the middle with Michael Dyer, but loses 2, 4th and 10. END OF FIRST QUARTER…. My Reaction: The crowd actually became part of the game on this drive causing 2 Auburn timeouts. AUB became very conservative on the 3rd down play, and will look to punt going into the 2nd quarter. Hopefully, there won’t be another trick play.
UGA Second Drive: 20 yard return for Boykin, 6 minutes left in the 1st quarter. Murray tries a screen to Crowell but broken up. Bennett catches the ball for a 8 yard gain, 3rd and 2. Murray completes a 5 yard pass to Orson Charles for the 1st down. RB Carlton Thomas breaks a 12 yard run for another UGA 1st down. UGA goes back under center. Murray completes a pass to Marlon Brown, UGA down to AUB 27. TD UGA: Murray completes and NFL level pass to Michael Bennet who was running to the corner of the endzone and dove for a great catch. Extra Point Good (77 yards, 6 plays, 3:04 long) UGA 14- AUB 7 My Reaction: UGA started the drive by staying short and getting first downs. They got the AUB safteys to come closer to the line, allowing for UGA to take shots downfield. UGA and Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo are looking to expose a weak AUB secondary early.
AUB First Drive: Defense looked strong except for the big play given up to Mitchell. Look to see if they respond. AUB kick return for 24 yards. Michael Dyer runs to the right for a 1 yard gain (2nd and 9). Emory Blake with the 10 yard reception from Clint Moseley for a 1st down. Incomplete Pass. Pass complete to Philip Lutzenkirchen for the 1st down. A double fake by Moseley, then he threw one deep to Emory Blake for a 45 yard gain. 1st down On UGA’s 9 yard line. UGA gets in the back field and talked Moseley for a 1 yard loss. Moseley’s pass incomplete. 3rd down and 10 for AUB. UGA gets the offsides penalty, so AUB has the ball 3rd and 5 to the endzone. TD AUB: AUB pulls a trick play as Moseley pitched the ball to WR CJ Uzomah, who trew to Lutzenkirchen for the TD. (76 yards, 8 plays, just under 3 minute drive) Extra Point good. UGA 7- AUB 7 My reaction: Trick plays continue to be a weak point for the highly sought UGA defense. They keep biting on the fakes (especially the safetys) and lets AUB get open.
UGA’s First Drive: Brandon Boykin begins the game with a 30 yard kick return. Aaron Murray scrambles for seven yards off of a play action play from the I-formation. Isiah Crowell runs two yards to the right making it 3rd and 1. Crowell takes it up the middle for 1 yard and the first down. Crowell to the right for no gain. UGA in shotgun formation and Murray almost gets sacked, but finds a way to get rid of the ball to Michael Bennett, 3rd and 5. Offsides on Auburn for a 5 yard penalty making it 3rd down and less than a yard to go. Murray keeps the ball and goes up the middle for the 1st down. After a 5 yard delay of game penalty, Crowell runs right for a 5 yard gain making it 2nd and 10. Murray’s pass incomplete intended for Chris Conley down field. Another UGA penalty, a false start so now it is 3rd and 15. Murray bombs a back shoulder throw to Malcolm Mitchell for a 35 yard gain. UGA 1st and 10 on AUB’s 10 yard line. Crowell 3 yard run, 7 away from the endzone. Murray’s throw incomplete and looked like a throw away. 3rd and 7 UGA. TOUCHDOWN UGA: Tavarres King with the 7yard cut-in route. Blair Walsh’s extra point is good UGA 7- AUB 0. (12 plays, 70 yards, 6:03 minutes long) MY Reaction: UGA almost blew it with penalties, but a clutch throw and catch by Murray and Mitchell got the dawgs downfield. The Dawg’s offense looked more effective in the shotgun instead of traditional under center formations.
Auburn will kick it off to UGA
Alright, its almost time to tee it up between the hedges once again for the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” Stay Tuned for updates on the game.
UPDATE: South Carolina just defeated Florida, putting the pressure on UGA to win to maintain their lead in the SEC East and a chance to go to the SEC Championship game
And don’t forget to follow me on Twitter benjammin_UGA. I am all about sports with some funny commentary in between.
So here are some fun facts for you guys while we wait for kickoff:
1)Auburn has given up twice as many rushing yards this season than Georgia, AUB 1671 yds- UGA 820 yds. Look for UGA to test the AUB defense on the ground early.
2)UGA is ahead of AUB in all major statistics except for rushing. So, expect alot of Michael Dyer and Ontario McCalebb all game against UGA’s 3-4 defense.
3) AUB has scored more points in the first and fourth quarter than UGA this season. We will see if this trend continues.
4) Aaron Murray still doesn’t have a win against a ranked opponent. Will it change today?
Hello sports fans, this is Ben Bolton here to give you some great information about the game going on today. We are about 50 minutes from kickoff, but expect updates throughout the game of information you may not get from watching the television. STAY TUNED!!!!
