Game 2: Georgia vs. #9 LSU, baseball live blog

Final Score: Georgia 3, LSU 2. So that’s it from Foley Field. The Dogs get two much-needed wins today. They’re now 3-3 in SEC play. They play one game at Clemson on Tuesday, then head back home for a three-game series against Misssissippi State. Thanks for reading, fans.

Top 7th: Georgia 3, LSU 2– More defensive changes. RHP Tyler Maloof will try to close the game out. He has seven saves in nine appearances. Jonathan Hester is now playing first base for the Bulldogs. Jones grounds out to second. Rhymes gets in a single over the infielders’ heads. Hanover pops out to short. It’s up to slugger Mikie Mahtook to save the game for LSU. A groundout to second, and that will do it. The Dogs win, 3-2, grabbing both games of the doubleheader and winning two out of three against LSU. Gullickson gets his second win of the year, while Maloof earns his eighth save.

Bottom 6th: Georgia 3, LSU 2– Ty Ross is now catching for the Tigers. Grant Dozar comes in at first base. DeRoach singles to left. Lance Martin in to pinch run. Ruiz hits into a fielder’s choice, Martin out at second. A great throw by Ross to pick off the steal attempt by Ruiz. Alsup walks May. Stephens flies out to center, and the inning is over. Heading into the last inning, it’s still Georgia 3, LSU 2.

Top 6th: Georgia 3, LSU 2– Katz flies out to center. Edward does the same. Snikeris hits a single between third and short for his second hit of the game. Dieterich’s wild pitch sends Snikeris to second. LSU sends in Beau Didier to pinch run for Snikeris. Ty Ross is in as a pinch hitter. Ross singles right up the middle, but Cone makes a great throw to nail Didier at the plate. Georgia preserves its slim lead.

Bottom 5th: Georgia 3, LSU 2– Verdin flies out to deep left. Farmer chops one right back to Eades for another out. Cone makes it three up, three down with a groundout to short.

Top 5th: Georgia 3, LSU 2– Pitching change for the Bulldogs: LHP Blake Dieterich takes the mound. He fans Watkins to start out the inning. Jones earns a walk after a full count. Rhymes singles to center, Jones to second. Hanover flies out to right field. Verdin nearly picked off Jones at third after the catch, but Jones slides in safely. Georgia coach comes out, and Gullickson will intentionally walk Mahtook, who hit a home run in the fourth and has 27 RBI on the year. The bases are loaded for Nola. Nola gives it a ride to deep center, but Cone makes the catch at the warning track. LSU strands three and still trails, 3-2.

Bottom 4th: Georgia 3, LSU 2– LSU reaches into its bullpen for RHP Ryan Eades. Ruiz knocks a single to right field. May pops out to second. Stephens flies out to shallow center. Welton singles up the middle, moving Ruiz to second. Hyams grounds out to first. Two runners are left on base. Still 3-2, Bulldogs.

Top 4th: Georgia 3, LSU 0– Hanover flies out to center. HOME RUN. Mahtook smacks his eighth homer of the year well over the leftfield wall. Nola hits a double off the same wall. Katz grounds out to first, almost beating the throw to Gullickson. Nola takes third base. Farmer has the first Georgia error of the day, throwing Edward’s grounder past Ruiz. Nola scores. Edward moves to second. Snikeris flies out to left to end the inning, but the Tigers grab two runs and cut the lead to 3-2.

Bottom 3rd: Georgia 1, LSU 0– Welton gets his first at-bat of the game, flying out to left on the first pitch he sees. Hyams reaches first on a throwing error by second baseman Jones. Alsup catches Verdin looking for his third strikeout. Farmer hits one to deep left-center that should have been an easy out, but Watkins drops it, resulting in Hyams scoring and Farmer taking second. Watkins already has two errors on the day. Cone scores Farmer on a single down the leftfield line. Cone takes second on Alsup’s errant attempt to keep him on the bag. LSU has four errors in less than three innings of play. DeLoach ends the inning by grounding out to third. One runner stranded by the Bulldogs, but they extend their lead to 3-0, helped by two fielding errors by LSU.

Top 3rd: Georgia 1, LSU 0– Snikeris opens up the third by blooping a single to right. Watkins successfully gets him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jones pops out to second. Rhymes grounds to second for the third out. Gullickson has pitched well so far.

Bottom 2nd: Georgia 1, LSU 0– Kevin Ruiz hits a laser that Hanover is able to snag. Watkins makes a diving catch of May’s drive to leftfield. Alsup gets a called strike three on Brandon Stephens. Score remains 1-0.

Top 2nd: Georgia 1, LSU 0– Mikie Mahtook leads off the second. He had a good first game, going 2-4 with 2 RBI. He flies out to deep right-centerfield. Austin Nola smacks a single between third and short. Gullickson fans Mason Katz, his second strikeout of the game. Edward lines out to short. LSU leaves one on. Still 1-0, Bulldogs.

Bottom 1st: Georgia 0, LSU 0– Levi Hyams is wearing #2 in this game to honor teammate Johnathan Taylor, who sustained a serious neck injury on March 6. Players have “JT-2″ decals on their batting helmets, and Zach Cone has also worn Taylor’s #2 in games this year. Hyams hits a double to left field, getting to second on an error by leftfielder Trey Watkins. Peter Verdin hits a pop-up to first. Kyle Farmer singles to left, moving Hyams to third. Cone lines out to short. Hyams scores on a passed ball. Alsup strikes out Brett DeLoach. The Bulldogs score one and strand one. They have an early 1-0 lead.

Top 1st: Georgia 0, LSU 0– JaCoby Jones leads off for the Tigers. Jones went 0-4 in the first game and gets caught looking for Gullickson’s first strikeout. Raph Rhymes, also 0-4 in Game 1, flies out to center. Tyler Hanover grounds out to third on a nice play by May, and the Tigers go three and out in their first inning.

Both teams have made some lineup changes from the first game. Alex Edward (.277 BA, 12 RBI) is playing first base for LSU and will bat seventh. Jordy Snikeris (.217 BA, 1 RBI) fills in at catcher and takes the eighth batting slot. For the Bulldogs, Colby May (.200 in 10 games) takes over third base and will bat seventh. Leftfielder Conor Welton moves to the ninth position.

Welcome to Game 2 of this Sunday doubleheader. Georgia took the first game, 9-5, off a strong performance from Michael Palazzone. The Bulldogs wore their white jerseys in Game 1 but have changed into their black unis. LSU sticks with their yellow ones. Georgia will start lefty Craig Gullickson (1-1, 6.00 ERA in four starts). Ben Alsup (3-2, 3.42 ERA in five starts) gets the nod for the Tigers.
