Dawgs vs. Tech Baseball Live Blog

Dawgs do not score any runs in the bottom of the 9th. The final score from Foley Field is Georgia Tech-15 Georgia-6.

Player of the game is Matt Skole with his two homers and 8 RBIs.

The Dawgs will look to rebound on Friday in the first of a three game series with LSU. Friday’s game starts at 7:30 at Foley Field.

Dawgs bring in Tyler Maloof in for the 9th inning. Mott Hyde, Sam Dove, and Kyle Wren are due up for the Jackets. Tech enacts a sacrifice bunt and the Dawgs have the first out of the inning. Tech gets a single and then Maloof hit Jacob Esch. Bases are loaded for the Techies. Matt Skole hits a grand slam to put GT up 13-6. This is is as good as done. Skole is 5-5 with 2 homers, 8 RBI, and a walk. What a game for the Jacket’s third baseman. Jackets are up 14-6. Now its Jackets up 15-6. going to the bottom of the 9th. Tyler Maloof did not have a good outing.

There is a little life in the Dawgs. They got two runners on base and Zach Cone singled to bring one in. The score is now 9-3. Tech is making a pitching change. Devin Stanton is now in the game. Chase Davidson adds to it with a double and RBI. Tech now up 9-4. Tech changes pitchers again and bring in Luke Bard. Dawgs now are down 9-5 after a grounder to second that scored the runner. A wild pitch brings in another Dawg and the score is 9-6. Pardon the pun, but the Dawgs are clawing back. Kevin Ruiz gets a single with two outs. Colby May has an opportunity to further close the gap. He does not and strikes out. Going to the top of the 9th: GT-9 Dawgs-6.


Cecil Tanner has come in to pitch for the Dawgs. He walks Matt Skole. Then throws a wild pitch which allows Skole to advance to second base. He also walks Daniel Palka. Perno is making a pitching change to Bryan Benzor..the righty from Gwinnett County. Zane Evans comes to the plate for Tech. He pops out to second for the first out of the inning. Dawgs get their second out on a force play to second. Jake Davies is thrown out after a grounder to third. Going to the the bottom of the 8th: GT-9  UGA-2

Due up for the Dawgs is Kyle Farmer, Kevin Ruiz, and Jonathan Hester. Farmer shows a little life for the Dawgs with a leadoff double. Ruiz grounds out to third. Colby May is pinch hitting for Hester.  Farmer advances to third on a wild pitch. May draws a walk and now there are runners at the corners for Brandon Stephens. He hits into a double play and we are going to the top of the 8th. Tech-9 Dawgs-2

Due up for the Jackets are Zane Evans, Brandon Thomas, and Jake Davies. Evans flies out to right field. Thomas walks on five pitches. Perno goes to the mound but keeps Patrick Boling in the game. Davies strikes out to give the Dawgs two outs in the inning. Mott Hyde has now come to the plate. He is 0-3 on the day. Hyde walks and now there are runners on first and second. Sam Dove comes to the plate. He is 0-2 on the game. Dove grabs a single to left field and drives in the eighth run of the game for the Yellow Jackets. They are blowing out the Dawgs now with a score of 8-2. Kyle Wren walks and the Jackets have ducks all across the pond. Earl Daniels is coming on to pitch for the Dawgs. He needs to stop the bleeding and get an out. He does the opposite and throws a wild pitch. Tech up now 9-2. This is getting ugly. It’s seventh inning stretch time at Foley Field. Tech-9 Dawgs-2

Due up for the Dawgs are Levi Hyams, Zach Cone, and Chase Davidson. Hyams hits a rocket to deep center. The ballpark barely contains it and that is the first out of the inning. Cone and Davidson go down easily both with hard hit balls right at Yellow Jackets. Tech-7 Dawgs-2 going into the top of the 7th.


Brandon Thomas grounds out to third to begin the top of the 6th for the Jackets. Jake Davies gets a bloop single to center. Okay, so honestly, I was grabbing some food for much of this inning. Tech expanded their lead to 7-2. I know that Matt Skole has four RBI and a 4-4 day. He is killing the Dawgs today. Tech-7 Dawgs-2 going into the bottom of the 6th inning.


Due up for the Dawgs are Brandon Stephens, Peter Verdin, and Curt Powell. Stephens chops out to third. Verdin flies out to left. Powell grounds out to third. Dawgs go quietly. Yellow Jackets-4   Dawgs-2 after 5 innings.


Tech quickly ties up the ballgame on a Jake Davies home run to left field. After that, Coach Perno has seen enough of Hawkins. John Herman enters the game for the Dawgs. He has an 8.38 ERA in 9.1 IP. Score is currently 2-2. Herman gets Mott Hyde to flyout to right for the first out of the inning. Sam Dove hits a long fly ball to right center field. Kevin Ruiz runs it down. The Dawgs continue to have a pretty much flawless game defensively. Herman issues the first walk of the game to Kyle Wren. He is the only runner on base for the Jackets. Tech initiates a hit and run with Jacob Esch. Jackets now have runners on first and third. Perno will change pitchers and opt for the lefty Craig Gullickson. He has a 5.14 ERA in 14 innings on the season. He needs to get a crucial out to preserve the tie in the ballgame. The Jackets get a basehit from Skole and go ahead in the game. Tech gets another run on a double from Daniel Palka. Jackets are now up 4-2. The damage stops there as Zane Evans grounds out to third. Going to the bottom of the fifth. Tech is up 4-2.


The Dawgs look to strike back. Hyams, Cone, and Davidson are due up in the inning. Levi Hyams gets it off to a solid start with a single to left field.  Cone pops out to third base. Hyams remains at first with one out now. Hyams advances to second on a pass ball. Davidson bounces out to second. Hyams moves over to third. Kyle Farmer hits a ball deep in the hole at third. Hyams scores and Farmer just beats out the throw to first. The score is now tied at 1 run apiece. Kevin Ruiz follows up with a deep double to left center field right where the Jonathan Taylor memorial is located. Farmer scores all the way from first base. Dawgs now winning 2-1. Jonathan Hester gets out to end the inning. After four innings, Dawgs are winning 2-1.

By the way, I just spotted friend of the Friday Pregame Show: Lacey Pierce. She is also a reporter for UGA Newsource and a former player on the softball team. Shoutout to her an all of the other 2000 fans here  at Foley Field.


Jacob Esch leads off the inning for the Yellow Jackets and hits a pop fly out of play. But, Kevin Ruiz makes a sliding catch to record the first out of the inning. Matt Skole takes a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence with a Home Run. He puts the first run on the board. Jackets go up 1-0. Palks flies out for the second out of the inning. Tech’s Zane Evans gets a single. That makes him 1-2. The Dawgs defense is looking good tonight. Kyle Farmer made a tough play to second to end the inning. Tech leads 1-0 going to the bottom of the 4th.

Brandon Stephens hits a laser to shortstop to open the bottom of the third. Jacob Esch caught it on the fly. Peter Verdin catches Tech off guard with a bunt single. That gives Georgia two hits on the game. Curt Powell hits out and Verdin gets caught stealing. Going to the top of the fourth: 0-0


The Dawgs get two quick outs in the top of the third inning. Hawkins struck out Mott Hyde and Sam Dove was thrown out on a close play at first by Kyle Farmer. The Yellow Jackets only have one hit to this point in the ballgame. Chase Hawkins shows some flashy glove work with a nice play off the mound. Greg Maddux would have been proud. Going to the bottom of the third: score is still 0-0


Due up in the bottom of the third inning for Georgia is Kyle Farmer, Kevin Ruiz, and Jonathan Hester. Farmer records an out. Ruiz steps to the plate.  He rips a line drive to left field. But, the ball is caught. Hester bloops one to third and the inning is over. After 2 innings, the score is still 0-0.


Zane Evans begins the inning with a grounder to third and quickly records the first out of the inning. Brandon Thomas gets the 2nd out in a deep fly to right field. Georgia’s pitcher Chase Hawkins is looking great thus far. Hawkins strikes out Tech’s Jake Davies to end the inning. After an inning and a half, Dawgs and Jackets are tied at 0-0


Curt Powell gets the Dawgs off to a good start with a single to left-center field. Hyams and Cone both flyout to deep center. Curt Powell gets in scoring position by himself after stealing second base. Chase Davidson really needs to drive him in here. He does not. Davidson hits a bouncer to first base and ends the inning. After 1 inning, the score is 0-0

Tech starts the game at the plate. Kyle Wren tried a bunt single, but was thrown out by Curt Powell. Jacob Esch gave the Dawgs another easy out with a dribbler to the pitcher. The Yellow Jackets get their first hit with a single from Matt Skole. Daniel Palka then hit a dribbler to the mount to end the inning.That was a quick and easy inning for the Dawgs.  Score is 0-0 going to the bottom of the 1st

It is a perfect evening for baseball here at Foley Field where the Georgia Bulldogs will host the 12th ranked Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. I am Dayne Young and I will update you every inning about the game. Here are the starting lineups
