Both teams have opened the quarter with a sense of urgency by throwing the ball down field. That is what we were all wanting in the press box. This game needs a little more excitement. UCF has a drive going as night falls. They gain a first down at the UGA twenty six yard line.
UCF Scores a touchdown and is now up 10-6 with 9:01 left in the game. Also, rely on my Twitter for the remainder of the game. I will soon leave to make it to the post game press conferences. That is @dayneyoung on twitter http://twitter.com/#!/dayneyoung It has been a pleasure to update this and I will update and recap the game as I can. Please look at the Twitter for updates as soon as I can give them to you. It has been a pleasure. Live from Memphis, I’m Dayne Young for WUOG.
Murray begins the possession with a seven yard run to escape pressure. A possible fumble was by Aaron Murray was recovered by Cordy Glenn. Georgia has to punt. UCF will take over at almost midfield. UCF’s offense is sputtering. This game could use a little excitement to ensue. A.J. Green just proved that he can fair catch as good as Logan Gray.
A.J. Green also showing he can still catch. He ran a good slant and Murray hit him with a solid pass. To the 4th Quarter we go.
Dawgs-6 UCF-3 Beginning of the 4th Quarter
Todd Grantham’s defense takes the field with the slim three point lead. They bend a little bit, but do not break. The Dawgs force UCF into a 3rd and 14. Georgia brought a blitz and forced Godfrey out of the pocket. Georgia forced a punt which was fair caught by A.J. Green. Dawgs will take the field at their own ten yard line. There is 6:04 left in the third quarter.
Georgia gets the ball to start the second half. Boykin does not have a good return. The Dawgs start at the 15 yard line. Georgia’s offense starts its drive with a Murray pass to A.J. Green. That seems to be the only consistent play on which Georgia has constant success. The wind is still whipping at the Liberty Bowl. Coach Bobo has also dialed up a few running plays from Washaun Ealey. Georgia has already burned three minutes off of the clock and they are not even at midfield. Georgia obviously sought to run the ball more this half. Converted tight end Bruce Figgins now has caught a ball when lined up in the backfield. Blair Walsh now to attempt a 41 yard kick in to the wind. The kick is up and the kick is good.
Dawgs-6 UCF-3 9:23 left in the 3rd quarter.
The first half of this football game has been underwhelming at best. The 3-3 score is very indicative of the struggles that both teams have had. Aaron Murray started the game perfectly, but threw two interceptions in the second quarter. Here are the stats for the first half.
Aaron Murray: 13-18, 114 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTS
Washaun Ealey: 9 carries, 33 yards
Carlton Thomas: 3 carries, 19 yards
A.J. Green: 4 catches, 43 yards
DAWGS TIED WITH UCF 3-3 AT HALF
Another turnover for the Dawgs. Aaron Murray throws his 2nd interception of the game. That is the worst pass Murray has thrown in weeks. UCF is now in the redzone with under a minute left in the first half. Georgia is in extreme danger of being down at halftime. UCF in the hurry up and now with the ball at the 6 yard line. They spike it with 0:48 seconds left. Grantham’s defense need to step it up in the redzone once again. With the amount of interceptions, I’m surprised the spiked ball was not picked off. The Dawgs redzone defense comes up big again and forces a 4th down at the five yard line. UCF calls the time out with 38 seconds left in the half. UCF elected to kick a field goal from the five yard line. Now the OJ’s will play the halftime show.
Dawgs-3 UCF-3 at the half.
Memphis’ own Marlon Brown has his first catch for the Dawgs. His family and friends go crazy. Dawgs are again driving…and again as I say a team is driving, an interception is thrown. Aaron Murray throws his first interception since the Florida game. He was targeting Logan Gray. UCF is taking advantage of the momentum swing and now has the ball in Georgia territory after a run and a pass from Godfrey to Waters. He then completed a pass to his tight end Adam Nissley. the ball is on UGA’s 32 yard line. Granthams defense needs to step up his game. UCF’s Latavius Murray has a 12 yard run to put UCF at the Dawg 20. The Knights keep attacking the middle of the field. L.Murray with another 12 yard run. Sanders Commings just saved a UCF touchown as Latavius Murray is now running wild. the ball rests at the UGA 6. There is 4;13 left in the first half.
Dawgs Redzone defense stepped it up big time by sacking Jeff Godfrey for a one yard loss. Then, Brandon Boykin picked the ball off in the endzone. Branden Smith and Brandon Boykin now have interceptions today. Georgia’s hands team is looking great today. Dawgs ball with 2:12 left in the half.
UCF is lining up in the shotgun and unsuccessfully ran an option pitch from Jeff Godfrey to Ronnie Weaver. UCF is struggling to put a good, extended drive together. Todd Grantham’s defense has played masterfully so far. They forced another UCF punt and A.J. Green had a 13 yard return. Mel Kiper has recently said that one thing that Green can not do is return punts. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, A.J. Green may have increased in NFL stock. I would say he is the best receiver to ever play at Georgia. I’m not breaking news there. Dawgs have the ball on their own 43 yard line with 10:01 left in the 1st half.
Here are some stats from the first Quarter: Murray:7-8 for 69 yards. Ealey has 7 carries for 23 yards. A.J. Green had two catches for 23 yards. The Dawgs began the second quarter with another A.J. catch to the opposing 49 and then Murray got sacked. Georgia was ineffective in the long down and distance. Dawgs just punted and UCF will have the ball at the 16 yard line.
Still 3-0, Dawgs winning…and no, this is not a baseball game.
The uneventful and tame first quarter has ended. This is the fourth year in a row that no TD has been scored in the first quarter in the Liberty Bowl. However, Georgia was in position to get one. Dawgs have the ball on their own 33 yard line as the 2nd quarter begins. The press box, to this point, has been most enthralled about the Tavarres King catch and cracking jokes about UCF’s mascot “Knightro.” I could not make that name up. Aaron Murray is no longer perfect on his passes after a deep incompletion to A.J. Green.
UCF starts their drive on their own 20 yard line after Brandon Bogotay kicked the ball through the endzone with the help of the wind. UCF is driving left to right from the pressbox view as you can see below. Quick self-publicity, if you want more immediate updates, you can follow my Twitter @dayneyoung . And while I am indulging in my personal promotion, UCF is moving the ball. Scratch that, Jeff Godfrey, UCF’s QB tried to throw a deep pass and was picked off by Branden Smith. It is UGA’s ball on their own 17 yard line. That was one of the worst passes I’ve seen in a long time. He overthrew his receiver by ten yards.
The first drive for the Dawgs is long and methodical. A.J. Green has his first catch in possibly his last game as a Dawg. Georgia has moved the ball with passes to Green, two to Durham, and the one to Munzenmaier. Georgia got out of a 3rd and five with a phenomenal one handed catch from Tavarres King. All of us in the pressbox let out a “wow” when we saw that one. Dawgs have converted twice on third down in this game. Georgia repeatedly is giving Washaun Ealey the football and they have a fourth and one from the three yard line. Dawgs kick the ball and convert a 20 yard field goal. Murray was 6-6 on that drive that lasted over nine minutes.
With 2:02 left in the 1st Quarter: Dawgs:3 and UCF:0
The Dawgs have their first 1st down of the day with an Aaron Murray nine yard run. Georgia has yet to pass the ball. That is because of their abysmal starting field position. Murray is out of the shotgun formation. Kris Durham has picked up the first reception for the Dawgs and there is a roughing the passer penalty to add on to it. Dawgs go to the air again with a five yard pickup catch from Fred Munzenmaier. Dawgs have already crossed midfield and are driving. The Dawgs do pick up their first penalty with a false start on Josh Davis.
Georgia fans have had two loud cheers in the beginning of this game: the penalty on the kickoff and UCF incomplete passes. UCF started their first drive by running often, but they stalled out on their own 43 yard line and had three incomplete passes. They have lined up to punt. A.J. Green was deep to return. He had no return and the ball was downed at the 2 yard line. That is where Murray and company set up shop.
Okay, the wireless internet is having huge issues in the press box, but I have an ethernet cable with me and I am set to go. It is gametime and UCF won the toss. They have elected to receive. Dawgs kick and this game is underway. UCF runs the kick back. It is a 99 yard kick return. There is a flag on the play. The call is holding on UCF. So that is a 99 yard kick off wiped the board. The Knights will start the game on their own 11 yard line where the offense will take the field.
Greetings and Happy New Year from the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee. I am Dayne Young. The Liberty Bowl is slowly filling, really, really slowly. Kickoff is just over 70 minutes from happening. The Georgia Bulldogs will battle the UCF Knights. The Dawgs come into this Bowl game with a 6-6 record. Meanwhile, UCF is the champions of Conference USA.
The Dawgs are wearing their customary red helmet along with their road white jerseys and the silver britches. UCF is wearing white helmets, black jerseys, and gold pants. I’ll update in a few minutes with some keys to the game and what to watch for, but I see some dessert that would be great after that Memphis BBQ sandwich i just had.
Here is a picture of my view from the press box and videos of the DawgWalk that occurred about 45 minutes ago.
