Mr. Georgia Basketball staying home

As first reported by the AJC Marcus Thornton aka Mr. Georgia Basketball chooses UGA over Georgia Tech, Alabama, and Texas. (http://blogs.ajc.com/recruiting/2010/05/18/high-noon-announcement-for-westlakes-marcus-thornton/?cxntfid=blogs_recruiting)

Thornton is undoubtley the best player coming out of our home state and is listed by Rivals as the No.121 player in the nation.  The 6 foot 7 215 pound forward will team up with current Bulldog stand outs Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie. This is a huge recurit for Coach Mark Fox as he establishes himself in the SEC. Thornton is a huge addition and will help this team tremendously in the post. The 09-10 team Georgia team was 10th in the SEC in points per game and 7th in rebounds per game Thornton averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds at Westlake High School in Atlanta.

Originally Thornton signed with Clemson but Bulldog fans are sure glad he changed his mind. Thornton will add power and the ability to score. Which is something the Bulldogs lacked last season as they went 14-17 overall,  5-11 in the SEC and were unable to win on the road. For those who doubted him, Mark Fox is proving he can recurit in the talented state of Georgia. Now it’s time to prove you can win.

Here’s a pretty good highlight reel of the future Bulldog:

UK, Calipari should be commended

The University of Kentucky, and especially first-year head coach John Calipari, recently pushed the limits in showing just how poor the “one-and-done rule” is for college basketball, which forces athletes to wait until their 19th birthday before declaring for the NBA draft. Calipari took his fight against the one-and-done rule to new heights this school year, when his ‘Cats posted a GPA of 2.025, falling far behind the school average of 2.91, the freshman average of 2.82, and putting the school last in the SEC among the nine schools who reported their team-GPA. Mettenberger pleads guilty to sexual battery

Anyone following the ongoing Zach Mettenberger situation had to know his transgressions over Spring Break involved more than fake IDs and alcohol. Today, Mettenberger came out to shed light on the events of that night, pleading guilty to two sexual battery.

Mettenberger was initially suspended for one game following his arrest outside a bar in Remerton, GA. The initial story alleged that the redshirt freshman quarterback was being charged with possession of two fake IDs and underage possession of alcohol.

After an outstanding G-Day performance, Mettenberger was abruptly released from the team. From there rumors started to swirl. Now, the final word appears to be in.

Surely, Mettenberger understands the grave severity of his actions and I hope that performs his punishment and grows from this experience. However, as a student-athlete, there are elevated expectations one must adhere to. Not only do his actions reflect poorly on himself, but that shadow extends to the football program and the University.

All student-athletes are visible and high-profile representatives of the University of Georgia. As such, they should know that their behaviors are subject to excess scrutiny and attention.

So thank you Mr. Mettenberger for embarrassing both my University and my high school. I truly appreciate it.
