Heatin’ Up (kinda) with Alec Ogletree

It’s not quite another Heatin’ Up, as the sound quality wasn’t too great, but here’s the transcript (which, due to the poor quaility, took ages to transcribe…you’re welcome) of the conversation between myself and Georgia’s top defensive recruit, Alec Ogletree.

James Carr: Alec, good to have you with us, how are you doing today?

Alec Ogletree: I’m good, and you?

JC: I’m doing very well, now you just got out of the gym, what are you throwing up these days?

AO: These days I’m doing some bench, squats and power cleans, stuff like that.

JC: Does Georgia have you doing their workouts yet or are you just working out with the high school?

AO: I’m still doing the high school workout but Georgia just sent me their workout book the other day.

JC: So you’ll be getting on that pretty soon?

AO: Oh yeah, I’m gonna be hitting that real quick.

JC: When you first being recruited by UGA, what stood out to you, what made you want to come here?

AO: When it first started, I had no interest in Georgia at all. But, I mean, it was the in-state school so I took my visit to it and I got to know the coaches, and players and learned about the academics and all that and it just really stood out to me.  I took my visits to other schools but Georgia was just the place for me to go.

JC: Where were you interested before?

AO: First of all, I was just really stuck on Miami, the Hurricanes, but, like I said, I took my visit to both schools and compared the two; both of them are good schools but I just picked Georgia.

JC: You’ve been committed here since last summer, I believe, but Georgia didn’t really have a great season this fall, how did that impact you, what was going through your mind?

AO: Well, I mean, I was looking at playing time and the coaching staff and talking to people who were really interested in Georgia and that really stuck out to me. But once I made my commitment I was pretty much stuck on it.

JC: So when Willie Martinez was fired, that didn’t really have much of an impact on you?

AO: Well it had some impact because he was there when they first started recruiting me and he would call me and stuff like that so we had a real good relationship, but I guess I just had to deal with it. You know, it is what it is.

JC: And now we have a new defensive coordinator, Todd Grantham, he’s going to be bringing in a much more aggressive defense, how do you feel about that, is that exciting?

AO: Yeah I’m very excited about that because I went to the games last year and the defense wasn’t real aggressive and just how they got beat on plays, but with him coming in and having an aggressive style, it should turn things around around real quick.

JC: Do you figure to get some playing time quickly because one of the main weaknesses of that defense was the secondary?

AO: It’s just a matter of me coming out and working hard and just showing why they offered me and why I came and do what I need to do to help the team out.

JC: Coach Garner has been well known and being a great recruiter, what’s your relationship like with him?

AO: We got a great relationship, he calls me just to chat about stuff, really stays in contact and not just like offer me and then stop talking to me ever again, but even after I committed they still stay in touch whenever they can.

JC: OK, final question, you played a lot of basketball in high school. UGA hasn’t had a great season this year, we still don’t have a road win. Do you think you could come in here and help us get a road win?

AO: Oh, yeah I mean, I would love to do both sports, I mean, if I could I would, but I’m not so sure about that (laughs).

JC: Haha, alright Alec well thanks for your time and I think I speak for all of Bulldog nation when I saw we’re excited about seeing you on the field, hopefully this fall.

AO: Alright, thank you.

Good interview. Seems like he’s got half a brain, this is a good thing.

Next football player you interview you should ask if they have a valid drivers license :) . Just kidding…but seriously…
