Yesterday, the Atlanta Thrashers informed Ilya Kovalchuk that he will be traded after negotiations on a new contract failed to solidify.
Kovalchuk has already cemented his legacy as the greatest player in the Thrashers 10 year history. He’s the franchise leader in goals and points and has spent all 8 of his seasons in Atlanta after being drafted by the Thrashers.
The looming departure of the lone star in Atlanta’s hockey landscape casts serious doubt on a franchise that is already struggling to attract fans and might have just alienated existing ones. So what exactly is next for hockey in Atlanta? (more…)
