Georgia vs. Wofford Live-Blog
Welcome to the official WUOG Georgia vs. Wofford live blog. I’m James Carr and I’ll be bringing the heat 5 times per half. We’ve been having some server issues tonight, so I want to apologize in advance for any technical issues. Initially, you’d think Wofford might be a bit of a cake walk but let me assure you this will be anything but. Wofford was up by 13 against Pitt in the second half in their last game. They’re a hot shooting team who light it up from range. Georgia has been quite the opposite. They’ve struggled with field goal percentage but had a phenomenal night rebounding last Friday against New Orleans. Will Georgia slow the pace down, take Wofford out of a rhythm and pound the glass or will Coach Fox see if he can get the Dawgs into a good shooting rhythm? We’ll find out in about 7:20.
A couple more things to note before the game. 1. I have a miniflip HD camera in my possession. I’m playing around with it quite a lot because it is so awesome. Chances of me missing something while I’m messing around are very high. 2. I’m sitting in the press area above the locker room rather than on the baseline. I don’t like it. 3. Umm. I forgot. I was playing with the camera. I’ll let you know if I remember.
Terriers:
Junior Salters
Corey Godzinski
Noah Dahlman
Cameron Rundles
Brad Loesing
Dawgs:
Dustin “Dimes” Ware
Ricky McThree
Travis “Trampoline” Leslie
Chris “The Hulk” Barnes
Trey “(Insert Nickname Here)” Thompkins
Just remembered what I was going to say. There are about 50 people in the student section.
Game time!
Update 15:58 Leslie is on the board to start the game which is a much better start than last week where he started with two fouls.
I tried to upload a video but the file was too big. Shame because then you would have understood why I’m not giving 100% of my attention to this game. I do know that Trey just scored because the announcer deafened me. Breaking news: Travis Leslie hit a jumper! Dawgs up 6-2.
Update: 11:25 Georgia has taken all the starters out except Dustin Ware and look a bit lost. A couple of bad turnovers and a lot of offensive confusion has given Wofford a 10-8 lead. Exhibit A, with Albert Jackson standing on the free throw line, Drazen standing about 5 feet away from Ware and 2 seconds on the shot-clock, Dustin hoists up a deep three and is way off. Georgia has the talent to win this one as Wofford is just taking what they can get. Right now, Georgia is just giving them too much. Wofford leads 10-8
Update: 8:26 McPhee and Vince Williams came in the game and didn’t help the situation much. A lot of passing, not much creativity and a deep 3 from Vince Williams which misses, causes a fast break and no one checks the runner who gets a great pass and makes the easy layup. I asked, “Why isn’t Trey checking in?” Coach Fox heard me and sent him in right away. Jeremy Price tried to dribble the ball in the lane, almost gets it stolen, jumps and tried an athletic pass to Thompkins who was under the basket. He threw it right to the other team and Wofford is up 19-8. It’s getting ugly and this place is DEAD.
Update: 5:20 The starters check back in to try and create some offense. Thompkins gets a tip in to end the scoring drought. It’s been at least five minutes since the Dawgs last point. After a timeout, Georgia gets some good ball movement and Chris Barnes takes out his frustration with a MONSTER jam over two Terriers and is fouled. He misses the free throw. Next time Barnes goes to the line we’ll just assume he missed unless I tell you. With the starters back in and Barnes making another layup the Dawgs have not allowed a point and cut into the lead 14-19.
Update 3:03 Finally, we have some back and forth scoring. Wofford hit a couple of free throws and Leslie comes back with a freakish layup. Wofford hit another shot and Georgia is called for a 3 second violation. Turnovers haunted this team in the second half of the first two games. Hopefully that trend is not about to continue. I lost a bet with Nick Parker that Jeremy Price would make his 1 and 1 but Travis Leslie got the rebound, missed, got the rebound and scored. It’s insane how athletic he is. Wofford hits a 3 so we’re not much better off, 20-26 Terriers.
Update Half Jason Dawson for Wofford is killing us from the line. He’s 3-3 and has been open for each attempt. Leslie hit a deep 2 which is something he’ll need to do more of as these guys are playing so far off him. Georgia went to some kind of zone there, but on the next possession after a Price layup switched back to man. Dustin Ware hits 2 free throws which may have been our first of the half. Georgia fights back to keep this game respectable but still trail, 26-29 Wofford
Just got the play-by-play sheet. Georgia went on a 7 minute scoring drought and went 0-6 from 3. And we’re still only down 3. It is certainly within reach. Fox will have to be more careful about his subs just taking one non-starter out at all times. When he reverted to the Williams-Zlavoric-Ayanorah-Jackson combo, things fell apart.
Update 15:24 Georgia works the ball around well and find an open Barnes who is fouled. He actually made the second one! A whole lot of nothing happens for two minutes and Barnes is back on the line, and MAKES the first! A streak! Unfortunately it came to a quick end. Wofford came down the court and hits a jumper which Barnes answers with the POWERSLAM, Georgia down just 1 32-33. After a quick rebound, Dustin “Dimes” Ware hits Leslie for a jumper and a Georgia lead 34-33!
Update 11:27 Georgia crashes down upon the Wofford player driving who kicks it out for an open three. After a good look from Thompkins, Wofford hit another 3. The lead was short lived. Bold move from Coach Fox who puts in Ebuka, Draz and Price during the media timeout. Ware is forced to create his own shot after the first offensive attempt for this team leads to a turnover. He hit a deep two this time, but if that’s what Georgia is going to rely on, we’re in trouble. After a defensive stop Jeremy Price misses and alley-oop. Luckily, Trey returns to the lineup for some much needed offensive activity. He heads to the line and drains two. Demario Mayfield checks in, gets blown past commits a foul and Wofford make both. Starters minus Barnes back in. Fox, and I, had clearly seen enough. Dawgs down 40-46.
Update 7:40 Price throws down a monster to get the “crowd” energized. After a bit more garbage, Price pokes the ball away from his defender and McPhee grabs it, drives down the court and hits Price for the layup. Two more up and backs with missed shots and Barnes goes to the line. He hits the first. Man is on fire tonight. Georgia down 3, 45-48
Update 3:56 It’s as loud as this crowd’s going to get tonight as Georgia is down just one after Leslie hits a couple of free throws. The defense looks quick and lively and force a turnover. They put Barnes on the line for 1 and he misses. It’s getting a bit sloppy out there. Georgia needs to score. They’re down 4, 49-53
Update 1:36 Ricky McThree gives Wofford a little eyeball delight and pulls Georgia within 1. Wofford answer with a 3-point play after a Price foul. Lead back to 4. Price then takes an ill-advised jumper and Coach Fox looks livid. Ware took a deep 2 and falls to the ground without a call but Price is fouled on the putback attempt. Price makes 1 Wofford lead 56-53
Update Full Time Wofford is hanging on to the ball taking up as much time as possible. McPhee called for a foul and Wofford makes both in the 1 and 1. Leslie drills a three to narrow the lead to 2. Wofford is then insanely called for a 5 second penalty giving Georgia the ball with 17.9 seconds left down two. Will they hold on for the last shot? Will they go for the win? I’m excited. And since we’re in the back section of the press, we are hardcore celebrating here. Lets go!!!! Ugh, Trey’s shot is stopped, long enough for a jump ball. Possession arrow Wofford. 12.3 left, Terrier ball, Dawgs down 2. Where’s Zac Swansey when you need him? Georgia gets the quick foul with 11.8 left. It’s a 1 and 1 for Wofford’s Jamar Diggs. He Misses! Dustin Ware sprints down the court and is fouled. Two shots to tie the game with 6.3 left. He hits the first. Wofford timeout. And he misses the second. The air is completely sucked out of the building. Vince Williams fouls with 3.1 left and Wofford’s shooting 2. He makes both. Timeout Wofford. We’ll need a deep shot here to win it. Thompkins throws to halfcourt to Leslie who tips to to Ware who just misses the 3. Dawgs lose 57-60.
