A High-Noon Breakdown

Posted by: kcarter
Nov 29 2009 11:36 am

While many Tech fans are crying into their calculators this morning, I can’t say I’m too surprised. Georgia was far and away the more talented football team coming into this game. From the opening kick, Georgia pushed around the #7 team in the country and pushed around ACC darlings Georgia Tech. With the win, Georgia moves to 7-5 and might just have escaped the clutches of Shreveport and locked down a spot in the Peach Bowl (sorry Chick-fil-A… your sandwiches are delicious, but your corporate sponsorship is not). More importantly, Georgia prevented us all from another year of Tech fans pretending like 45-42 was a blowout.

There is no High-Noon Sports Show this weekend, so here are the grades for your beloved Bulldogs in blog format: (more…)

I Bleed Red (And so do you)

It’s happened again. I’ve been sucked in. Like my former co-host Kirk Carter (though certainly not because of anything he has written, trust me) I believe in the Red and Black. I think we’re going to come out of Atlanta with a win. (more…)

How to beat the North Avenue Trade School

It’s that time of year again. Georgia and Georgia Tech are set to square off in their 104th meeting. One team comes into this game 10-1, with a date in the conference championship game next week. The other sits at 6-5 and is looking for a win to salvage some sort of meaning out of a lost season. The roles are reversed this year as the #7 Yellow Jackets find themselves favored over a listless Bulldogs squad. The Dawgs have won 4 straight in Bobby Dodd stadium, but not many people are giving them much chance to extend that streak to 5. I know that many of you will get a head start on drowning your sorrows before the 8pm kickoff, but don’t plan your night of mourning just yet. Despite the terrible things I’ve said about this Georgia team this year… and this team is truly terrible… I think the Dawgs will be marching out of Atlanta with a win. To do so, they’ll need to do three simple things, a tall task for a team that has failed at doing the simple things all season long.

Throw the ball, a lot

While most of the Bulldog Nation holds its breath when Joe Cox drops back to pass, the red-headed warrior might be Georgia’s best chance of winning in Atlanta. The Tech defense ranks 10th in the ACC in pass defense. The Jackets are surrendering nearly 230 yards through the air. Additionally, Georgia Tech only has 9 interceptions on the year, only two more than the Bulldogs (who have become notorious for their inability to force a turnover). Believe it or not, Joe Cox is third in the SEC with 213 YPG. Yes, he does have 14 interceptions to 21 touchdowns, but those 21 TDs are also third in the conference. Even without AJ Green, Georgia still has a cadre of tall, talented recievers, capable of stretching the feild against the Jackets. Cox proved in Fayetteville earlier this year that he can go toe-to-toe in a shootout on the road.

Remember how to tackle

It’s sad that a program like Georgia is incapable of teaching a skill so basic as tackling, but Georgia has stunk when it comes to wrapping up and making plays on defense. If you need an example, I invite you to watch Charles Scott’s game winning touchdown for LSU from earlier this season. Georgia has the speed on the defensive side of the ball to run with Georgia Tech, but if they can’t wrap up backs like Johnathan Dwyer or Roddy Jones, its going to be shades of last season.

No stupid mistakes

Counting the last three quarters of the Auburn game and the first half of the Kentucky catastrophe, Georgia played their best football of the season. In those five quarters, the Bulldogs limited penalties, kept turnovers down, and played like the team we expected to see all season. I think the Dawgs might have been looking ahead to Tech as they came out of the tunnel for the second half on Saturday night. The four turnovers in the second half can’t happen again if Georgia wants to make the scoreboard look close to respectable in Atlanta. The responsibility for these mistakes falls sqarely on the head coach. I don’t know if Mark Richt has what it takes to talk some sense into his players, but another meltdown like last weekend and we could see Mark Richt and his Orange-glo tan patrolling someone else’s sidelines.

Act like you care.

Georgia Tech fans have been celebrating the world’s first three-point blowout for a year now. Georgia, meanwhile, was whitewashed by rival Tennessee and run out of Jacksonville by the team they’ve come to despise most, Florida. While Georgia did gather their pride for a win over Auburn, the wind went right back out of Georgia’s sails in the second half against Kentucky. In my opinion, the biggest problem with this defense in the past couple of years has been a lack of energy and passion. Tech is typically hyped for a game against the Bulldogs, lets hope that Georgia brings the same sense of urgency and, maybe, a little swagger (note: swagger does not mean new uniforms). Richt is 16-1 against Tech as both an OC at Florida State and as the HC at Georgia. Its safe to say last season’s loss to Tech rattled him a little bit. According to my inside sources, the Dawgs have circled and prepped for the Tech game from Day 1 of Spring Practice. That really says something about how much Georgia really does care about this game, to prioritize it above a game like Florida. Lets hope the Bulldogs show how much they care when the run out on the field Saturday night.

My prediction: Georgia 45, Georgia Tech 42

And since Thanksgiving is a time for leftovers, here’s a sampling of some other picks that you shouldn’t contact your bookie with.

#2 Alabama 17- Auburn 12
West Virginia 31 – #9 Pittsburgh 27
#6 Boise State 30 – Nevada 28

Painfully Angry

Georgia walked into the second half of the season with a chance at retribution. They suffered big losses at Florida and Tennessee and were embarrassed defensively by barely-capable Stephen Garcia and Jonathan Crompton. After the victory over Auburn, it seemed Georgia might have turned a corner, committing few penalties, not turning the ball over and shutting down the top offense in the SEC in the second half. For once, the team showed heart and ability after going down in the first quarter. Signs of resilience, something rarely seen in the last two seasons. But in just 30 minutes of mistake ridden, penalty prone, turnover-tormented football, all of that came completely undone. (more…)

Kentucky vs. Georgia Live Blog

Hello. I’m Robert Inskip and I’ll be taking care of our Live Blog coverage tonight. It’s Senior Night in Sanford Stadium tonight as the Dawgs play host to the Kentucky Wildcats. It’ll be the last time playing between the hedges for Jeff Owens, Geno Atkins, Kade Weston, Joe Cox, Prince Miller and eighteen other seniors. Whether or not this will be the last home game for Rennie Curran and Rashad Jones remains to be seen. It won’t be the last for A.J. Green, but the Dawgs will be without him tonight as he recovers from a shoulder injury suffered against Auburn last week. On defense the Dawgs will be without Bacarri Rambo, the redshirt freshman safety whose play has earned him more and more playing time as the season as progressed. He had not been playing nearly enough if you ask me. Rambo suffered a concussion on his touchdown saving hit in the final minutes against Auburn last week.

In Green’s absence, look for Israel Troupe to build on his breakout performance from last week. Also look for true freshman Rantavious Wooten to see increased action. In Rambo’s absence, Makiri Pugh and Quintin Banks could see more time.

For Kentucky, the top player to watch has to be Randall Cobb, who is one of the most versatile players in the SEC. The sophomore is officially listed as a wide receiver, but will sometimes take snaps at quarterback. He is also a punt and kick returner for the Cats, and serves as the holder for field goals and extra points. Sounds like Champ Bailey or Hines Ward when they were Dawgs. When Cobb isn’t taking the snaps, Kentucky’s quarterback will be true freshman Morgan Newton, a big and athletic player who was one of Kentucky’s top prizes in its recent recruiting class. On defense, watch cornerback Trevard Lindley, one of the best at his position in the conference. It would have been fun to see him and A.J. matchup. Also watch Micah Johnson, a linebacker for the Cats who like Lindley, is on the watch list for several national awards.

Both teams come into the game with 6-4 records, as both became bowl eligible with wins last week. For Dawgs, the Music City Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Chick-fil-A Bowl, and Outback Bowl all remain apparent possibilities. While the SEC division titles have been sewn up for a while, a lot is still up in the air in terms of bowl destinations for teams behind Bama and Florida.

Many fans have shown up in black to night to honor the UGA VII, who died suddenly of a heart attack this week. I already miss seeing a white bulldog strutting around down there before the game! A moment of silence was held in his honor.

I am permitted to update three times per quarter. Kickoff is at 7:45. Thank you for logging on to WUOG and enjoy the game!

James Carr vs. Mark Pope

Here’s the battle of HORSE between myself and basketball legend, Mark Pope (unrelated to the man in the Vatican). We battled in Stegeman Coliseum for hours, but I managed to trim it down to just 9 minutes.

I had to edit the video a bit to satisfy some of the Athletic Department’s cravings. Unfortunately it makes my pregame interview look a bit silly but then again, so does the rest of the video. Enjoy.

Georgia Wofford Wrap

Posted by: James Carr
Nov 17 2009 11:38 pm

Georgia had a tough loss today against a good shooting Wofford team, 60-57. Georgia looked discombobulated early in the game going a full 7 minutes without scoring in the first half. Without high scorers Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie in the game, Georgia’s offense looked stagnant and much without a leader offensively. (more…)
