Game 2: LSU vs. UGA Live Blog
Welcome to Game Two of our series between the #1 Georgia Bulldogs and the #5 LSU Tigers. Robert Inskip and Michael Terry will be bringing you more live blog coverage throughout the game, posting once every half inning. The Dawgs will try to bounce back after falling to the Tigers 8-4 last night. It’s a beautiful day here at Foley Field with yet another good crowd, as the series is sold out. There’s a pretty good turnout from the LSU faithful among those in attendance.

4:09- Top 9th. LSU 6, UGA 10: Dean Weaver (RHP), a junior from Douglasville, replaces Palazzone. Blake Dean grounds out to second base. Ochinko then hits a single that makes it between first base and second base and into right field. Then, DJ LeMahieu hits a slow rolling ground ball in the infield down the first base line. Weaver fields it, but his throw to first base is wide. LeMahieu is safe at first and Ochinko moves to third base. Weaver then gets Micah Gibbs to ground out to second base. Ochinko scores. Ryan Schimpf then hits a double into left field, scoring LeMahieu. Mikie Matook pops up to UGA first baseman Rich Poythress for the final out of the game. The final score is Georgia 10 LSU 8. 3:55-Bottom 8th. LSU 6, UGA 10: New pitcher into the game for the Tigers, Daniel Bradshaw. Taylor flies out to left field to begin the inning for the Bulldogs. Poythress grounds out to first base. The third batter of the inning, Massanari, drops a bloop hit into right field for a single. Peter Verdin powers one with his wrists to left field. Massanari had a jump and advances to third. Verdin gets to second on Mitchell’s (LF) throw to third. On a 1-2 pitch, Bradshaw gets Joey Lewis swinging to end the inning and the threat of UGA adding to their four run lead. – MT
3:48- Top 8th. LSU 3, UGA 10: DJ LaMahieu singles into right field to get things started in the 8th for LSU. Micah Gibbs then hits his own single, this one into left field. Ryan Schimpf then hits a long fly ball into left field, where Jonathan Taylor makes the catch for the first out of the inning. During Mike Matook’s at-bat, both runners advance on a wild pitch by Palazzone. Matook then grounds out to third, as LaMahieu scores and Gibbs stays at second. Tyler Hanover then singles into left field, scoring Gibbs. Leon Landry hits a single into right field just out of the reach of first baseman Rich Poythress. Hanover moves to third. When pitching to Jared Mitchell, Palazzone throws a wild pitch, allowing Hanover to score and Landry to move to second base. Mitchell then strikes out swinging.

3:32-Bottom 7th. LSU 3, UGA 10: After the 7th Inning Stretch and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” Joey Lewis pops out to center field. Colby May follows with a double to left center. Levi Hyams picks up an RBI on his double to right center during the next at bat. Demperio makes contact on a hit to back of the infield and beats out the throw to first. Hyams advances to third on the play. Matt Cerione hits a deep fly ball to left field but it is caught. Hyams tags to give UGA their 10th run. Demperio had been stealing, but retreated safely to first. Demperio’s steal attempt is foiled and he’s thrown out at second for the final out of the inning. LSU 3, UGA 10. -MT
3:21- Top 7th. LSU 3, UGA 7: Michael Palazzone (RHP), a freshman from Marietta, replaces McRee. He strikes out the first two batters he faces, getting Nicholas Pontiff to go down swinging, then getting Jared Mitchell to strike out looking. Blake Dean then walks. Sean Ochinko is then retired when UGA centerfielder Matt Cerione makes a diving catch. Cerione ran in and dove forward to make the play.

3:12-Bottom 6th. LSU 3, UGA 7: Demperio begins the inning by grounding out to the pitcher. Matt Cerione hits a stand-up double into left field. Jonathan Taylor comes in for Zach Cone and lays down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Cerione to third. Poythress hits a double off the right field wall scoring Ceronie. LSU has a team meeting at the mound—however, no one is warming up in the bullpen for the Tigers yet. Bird (P) walks Massanari. Runners now at first and second. Davidson grounds into a 6-4 to end the inning. End of inning, LSU 3, UGA 8. -MT
2:58- Top 6th. LSU 3, UGA 7: DJ LeMahieu starts off the inning with a double that bounces off of the right center field wall. Micah Gibbs hits a hard ground ball to UGA third baseman Colby May, who fields the ball and gets Gibbs at first base. LeMahieu holds at second base. Ryan Schimpf then gets hit by a pitch in the helmet. McCree bounces back however, as he gets Mikie Mahtook and Tyler Hanover to strike out swinging to retire the side.

2:50-Bottom 5th. LSU 3, UGA 6: Ryan Bird’s dominance continues as he strikes out Bryce Massanari to start the inning. Davidson gets on with an hit the opposite way into left field. Joey Lewis cranks a hit into right field for a single. Davidson moves up to third base. Hyams appears to ground into a sure double play, but DJ LeMahieu (SS) bobbles the ball and can only get the out at second. Davidson scores. Demperio hits a screamer up the center knocking the glove off of the pitcher Bird. Bird regains composure and throws to first for the third out of the inning. LSU 3, UGA 7. -MT
2:40- Top 5th. LSU 3, UGA 6: Nicholas Pontiff hits a hard ground ball that’s handled by UGA shortstop Levi Hyams, who throws to first base for the out. Mcree forces another ground ball out when he gets Jared Mitchell to ground out to second baseman Michael Demperio. Blake Dean then gets on base for the Tigers with a walk. McCree ends the inning when he gets Ryan Schimpf to fly out to right field, as Zach Cone makes the catch.

2:34-Bottom 4th. LSU 3, UGA 6: LSU pitcher Ryan Bird, who has 16 K’s on the season in just 11 innings, is brought in the game to pitch. He strikes out the side taking down Cerione, Cone, and Poythress. He just plowed them down. The Georgia batters looked completely lost at the plate. We’ll go to the Top of the 5th. – MT
2:22- Top 4th. LSU 2, UGA 6: Micah Gibbs hits a solo home run that bounces off of the top of the right center field fence, making the score UGA 6 LSU 3. Ryan Schimpf lines out to first base, as Poythress snares the low, well-hit ball. Mikie Matook then flies out to right field, and Tyler Hanover grounds out to shortstop for the third out.

2:16-Bottom 3rd. LSU 2, UGA 4: Rich Poythress begins the inning with a base hit right back up the middle. Massanari makes himself 2-2 on the day with a bloop single into center field. Runners now at first and second. After two unsuccessful bunt attempts by Allen, Poythress overslides third base on a steal attempt and gets thrown out. On the next pitch, Allen fouls a ball off of his knee and is forced to leave the game. Chase Davidson enters the game for Allen inheriting a 2-2 count. Davidson strikes out on the next pitch. Joey Lewis, after a long at bat, hits a high line drive to left center field. Jared Mitchell (LF), who also is a wide receiver for the Tigers’ football team, dives and appears to make the catch, but the ball pops out when he hits the ground. Massanari comes all the way around to score. It looked like there was going to be a play at the plate, but the ball bounced by Micah Gibbs (C). Joey Lewis advances to second. Colby May hits a single up the middle and Lewis comes around to score. Bulldogs up 6-2. The hitting is contagious; the next batter, Levi Hyams, hits a single into left field. Runners at first and second. Demperio strikes out looking to end the inning. LSU 2, UGA 6.
1:57- Top 3rd. UGA 4, LSU 1: Tyler Hanover starts the Tigers off with a single that bounces off of the pitcher’s mound and makes it into center field. Nicholas Pontiff adds his own single, which sneaks in between shortstop and third base. McRee then walks Jared Mitchell to load the bases. The next batter, Blake Dean, fouls out to catcher Joey Lewis. During Sean Ochinko’s at-bat, Lewis picks Mitchell off of first base for the second out. Ochinko then walks. The next batter is DJ LeMahieu. McRee thows a wild pitch, and Hanover scores from third base to make the score 4-2. LeMahieu then grounds out to shortstop.

1:45-Bottom 2nd. LSU 1, UGA 4: Due to technical issues, this post was loss. However, it was a quick and uneventful inning for the Bulldogs. LSU’s Schimpf was busy recording all three outs in order–Demperio, Cerione, and Cone. -MT
1:38- Top 2nd. LSU 1, UGA 4: Micah Gibbs flies out to center field to start the inning. Ryan Schimpf then strikes out looking. Mikie Mahtook gets on base with a single into center field. During the next at bat, McRee tries to pick off Mahtook at first, but his throw gets by UGA first baseman Rich Poythress. Mahtook tries to score all the way from first, but Poythress throws him out at the plate.

1:32-Bottom 1st. LSU 1, UGA 0: Down 0-1 already, the Bulldogs look to avoid a repeat performance of last night’s beating. Matt Cerione leads off with a infield hit to LSU 2b Ryan Schimph who makes a difficult play to field the ball, but can’t get the ball over to first. Zach Cone fails to move Cerione over striking out after a long at-bat. Rich Poythress improves on his .443 season average by hitting a screamer into right field for the base hit. The hit-and-run was on which allowed Cerione to end up at third.
Bryce Massanari hits what appears to be a fly out to right field, but the wind carries it out of the park for a 3-run home run. It’s his 9th of the season. The ball barely sneaks over the fence. UGA fans go crazy. I can’t emphasize enough how much the fans are into this one.
LSU’s Austin Ross (RHP) appears rattled and walks Lyle Allen following the home run. Joey Lewis hits a 1-out double off the wall in left center field. Georgia has runner on second and third. Colby May hits a sacrifice fly into right field and is able to score Allen from third. Levi Hyams has a really long at-bat. Levi Hyams grounds out to Tyler Hanover (3b) to end the inning. End of inning: LSU 1, UGA 4.

7:14-Top 1st Inning. LSU 0, UGA 0: Alex McRee (LHP), a junior from Gainesville, starts the game on the mound for the Dawgs. He gets the leadoff hitter Nicholas Pontiff to ground out to shortstop. Jared Mitchell then blasts a solo homerun over the centerfield fence. Blake Dean hits a single between first and second base. Next up for the Tigers is Sean Ochinko, who hits a line drive to UGA third baseman Colby May, who knocks it down and throws to second for the force out. DJ LeMahieu then hits a grounder to UGA second baseman Michael Demperio who flips to Levi Hyams covering second base for the third out.
