MUSIC REVIEW: Bright Moments

Posted by: Music Directors
Feb 18 2012 1:18 pm

Band: Bright Moments
Album: Natives LP
Record Label: Luaka Bop

Kelly Pratt, a multi-instrumentalist or better known as the musical architect of Bright Moments, spent the winter of 2010 in his New York City apartment combining the sounds of flugelhorns, trumpets, pianos, flutes and synthesizers with his poetically inspired lyrics, thus creating his newest album, Natives. Though many may be unfamiliar with Bright Moment’s latest album, Natives, the instrumentals, however, may ring a bell. From the trumpet heard in many of Beirut’s songs to the flugelhorn and flute that ties together Arcade Fire’s album Neon Bible, Pratt has passed his talent through various indie pop artist. Nevertheless, Natives’ nine tracks bring something new to the table. The eclectic background sounds, however many there may be, all tie together to complement the melody and Pratt’s soothing vocals. His serene melody, electronic beats, and instrumental collision produce an addicting album that just can’t be turned off.

Recommended if you like: LCD Soundsystem, Beirut, Arcade Fire

Beware, Caveman’s new album is awesome.

Caveman

Coco Beware is the debut album of Caveman, and what

better way to celebrate their release than by joining them

on the Georgia Theatre rooftop for an unforgettable

evening. (Don’t forget, the local band Tumbleweed

Stampede will be opening for them! What an honor.)

This five-piece indie rock band from NY is

sure to do anything but disappoint.

Tennis and Islands are releasing their latest albums tomorrow, which happens to be on the most romantic day of the year!

1. Tennis: Young and Old

The married couple has pumped out their sophomore album filled with blissful beach-pop tunes. They haven’t strayed far from the sound of their last album (Cape Dory), but they have managed to gain a more clear focus than before. This is the perfect album to bring listeners out of the winter gloom and bring them into the sunshine and warmth of summer.

2. Islands: A Sleep and a Forgetting

In just two short weeks the eleven-song album A Sleep and a Forgetting was created, and this time around their songs aren’t as upbeat and bubbily as usual. Lead singer Nick Thorburn says their album encompasses strong feelings of loss and remorse as a result of his recent break-up. But, it still has happy upbeat tunes that show he is pushing forward and not looking back.

BAND ALERT: OBERHOFER

Someone has a new album coming out, and their name is Oberhofer. Or should I say his name is Oberhofer, Brad Oberhofer to be exact. The 21-year-old boy from Brooklyn has been making beautiful music for a while now. One of his best songs being, “o0oOo0Oo.” Actually, I take that back; all of his songs are quite pleasing to the ears. Although he has released lots of amazing songs in the past, Timecapsules II is his first LP release. From the buzz that he has created from his two EP’s, his new album is sure to be everyone’s latest obsession. Listen to his songs just once, and you too will be hooked on his harmonious vocals, jangly guitars, and light-hearted melodies.

RIYL: Local Natives, French Kicks, Animal Collective, The Most Serene Republic
