Bird Names 09-16-10

There was a bit of a switcheroo and these guys came to play Live in the Lobby at the last minute. Self-proclaimed proprietors of psychedelic, melodramatic popular song, they’ve been making music since ‘04. Ear Conditioned Nightmare described their latest album, Sing the Browns, as, “The best chamber kitchen-folk unit,” they’ve heard in quite a while, and that it’s “an instant weirdo classic.”

This particular Athens band is chock-full of WUOG wonderfulness. That’s right some of our very own are part of this sometimes Italian/sometimes English outfit. Plus it’s pretty much a guarantee that their music’ll make ya smile. Have a listen, eh?

So WUOG’s serving up some hot, fresh, fuzzy, female vocals. But don’t fret! There’s a healthy dose of reverb, pop, and even some soul to satiate your appetite. This Athens band is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Enjoy this wonderful treat!

Ham1 08-26-10

Flagpole hailed their debut album, Ham1, as the #1 Critics album of 2005. And here’s why, “Ham1 is the album Athens used to be known for. It’s pop, clearly homegrown, but precisely, if quirkily assembled. Droll. Adventurous. Peculiar. Successful in both its instrumental and vocal tracks. Jim Willingham and his band should be proud. Athens should be proud.” Pretty bold statement eh? Well you should listen for yourself!

Man Ray 08-24-10

Here’s what local yokel Jeff Tobias had to say about these gents,”Folks have been buzzing around about this new-ish addition to the local mathletic division. The brothers Olivera—Ryan, Jordan and Derek—are joined by guitarist/sound engineer deluxe Gene Woolfolk in composing algorithmic progged-out sounds, all spastic time-changes and atonal chord voicings.”-

The Sugar Dicks 4-29-10

Don’t have a clue as to what the music behind the moniker sounds like? Here’s a helpful description from our friends at Flagpole, “The band’s simple-not-stupid approach to songwriting is as fun as lonely gets, which, as anyone with access to alcohol and rooftops knows, can actually be really fun. It’s affectation-free roots rock, based less on self-conscious attempts at garage-rock puritanism than on being some music you can goddamn dance to.”

Still nothing? Listen and check out The Sugar Dicks on Myspace!

The Gold Party 4-27-10

With influences ranging from Bowie to The Magnetic Fields, The Gold Party knows what’s up. But to get a feel for their self-proclaimed “John Hughes” sound, it’s best if you slip on your best pink dress, make a snide comment about Barry Manilow, and lose yourself in the dark, hook-laced dance music.
