Bambara – (10/22/2009)

Bambara plays live in the WUOG Lobby!

“”The eponymously titled debut release from local three-piece Bambara is pretty damn good. Though the band has been playing together since early 2001, it wasn’t until October 2007 that the boys finally emerged from the shadows and began playing out, opening for the likes of A. Armada and Cinemechanica. This newest offering sounds emotionally charged and musically mature after six years of honing their craft. What unfolds from the speakers is an engulfing and often engaging blend of aggressive post-rock and psychedelic ambience.”

-Charley Lee, Flagpole Magazine

Reeks of Failure – (10/20/2009)

Reeks of Failure plays live in the WUOG Lobby.

“Formed in January of this year, this local band is grounded in the aesthetic that emerged from the early-’80s hardcore scene. “We like raw, stripped down rock music that has a life and an energy and an honesty to it,” says Lewin.

Although the band began by writing three-chord, loud, fast rock music, Reeks of Failure has begun to expand and experiment outside the box, writing new tunes infused with funk and adding a “wistful ballad-like number” in the mix. The newer material, says Lewin, is more akin to Jawbreaker, The Lawrence Arms and other such acts.”

The Brothers Marler play live in the WUOG lobby.

The Bros. have their own style.”, which “succeeds quietly, with understatement, and subtlety.”(Flagpole Mag) “Songs For Pluto”, “ displays poise and impressive versatility, sharing time on lead and rhythm guitar, stripped-down drums, piano, harmonica and bass…this approach combined with the boy’s soul inspired, almost Dylanesque, double vocal stylings create an entertaining album rich in character and style.” (Performer Mag) “ The Bros. Marler has knocked the dust of f of sounds old and new, just as Songs for Pluto will surely knock more dust off of your stereo.”(Hittin the Note Mag).

Don Chambers – (10/8/2009)

Don Chambers plays live in the WUOG lobby.

..Some performances are just too damn good to ignore. I..m talking about Don Chambers and GOAT as – once again – they go for broke, burning up the night like a petrol-soaked bonfire of dry mesquite and hickory scrub. Chambers always looks like he..s been dragged through a bush backwards after a blinding night on bad moonshine; regardless of this sweaty and gruff exterior, he never fails to holler and play his banjo like a man trading blows with the devil. While Chambers is, and should be, the show, I really, really can..t say enough about the addictive medicinal powers of GOAT… – Flagpole Magazine

Soapbar – (10/1/2009)

Soapbar, a local Athens band, plays live in the WUOG lobby!

Once upon a time, Ryan dreamed of having a band. But not just any band. A band that had heart and soul and a nice pair of legs (thanks Adam). So Ryan and his pal Adam joined forces and taped “Untaped” and thus began soapbar. But then, by a twist of fate, soapbar is asked to play a show in 4 days at Sky City in the band’s hometown of Augusta, GA. Alas, Ryan and Adam did not have a drummer to lay down the sweet beats. SUDDENLY, an idea came to Ryan. Heather! She plays the drums! But one problem stood in the newly formed soapbar’s way: Heather had not played drums in many years. So they practiced hard for 4 days and 4 nights. Their nervousness seemed insurmountable. BUT then they got over it and rocked all over that stage. Once they conquered the fear, there was no stopping them! Now they are singin’ and playin’ all over the place! This band is no longer a secret. soapbar plays shows. You have one day.
