Joyce Manor’s most recent album Cody is a move away from their usual pop/punk sound towards something a little more accessible and consistent. With their departure from high energy riffs to solemn silky pop, Joyce Manor moves to a more mature sound. This album may also be their longest, moving towards ballads and choruses and away from their standard minute and a half long jumpy tracks. Their lyricism aims to capture feelings of youth, and the feelings of being in your mid 20’s and stuck in a strange in-between place in your life. Standout tracks on this album are Reversing Machine and Eighteen which meld together their old style and the direction of this new album well. “Make Me Dumb” and “Fake ID” are the tracks that display their new direction well. Overall this is an interesting, more mature direction for Joyce Manor.
