TaterZandra throws a lot of pronunciation confusion out there. While I’m somewhat confident in saying Nom De Plume (as in, Nom De Plume should be on the short list for the strongest local releases of 2013 thus far), I lower my voice when I tentatively mention ‘TaterZandra’ and always apologize for butchering track names like ‘Wanjiku’ or the subject at hand, ‘Ururme.’
“Ururme’ really isn’t an album stand out per se, a somewhat backhanded compliment to Nom De Plume as a whole, but an interesting case study into what TaterZandra brings to the table. A band that’s able to take the hopscotch innocence of jangly tambourines, hand claps and a vocal line that sounds fit for a school-yard chant and turn it into the towering absolution of a rainstorm. Just as fun to hear and see the rumbling approach of the dark cloud cover as it is when it breaks open; equal parts triumphant-beauty and primal-destruction.
