An Alternative to the Ladder Theory

Posted by: Nicki
Feb 06 2009 8:00am

A couple of weeks ago, Girls Night In did a show on the “ladder theory,” which is in short a method of describing the interaction and differences between men and women.

Interesting and insightful as that may be, we had probably best admit that Mario’s explanation of relationships is much more likely to get the point across to your average video game-loving male.

Illustrated explanation of why ladder/friend zone jumping isn’t recommended here.

Drinking Culture

The Merry Drinker by Frans Hals.

Wikipedia provides articles on everything from the UGA literary societies to Truthiness. But, this article on “Drinking Culture” stands out.

Generally, people drink for one or more of six reasons — to quench thirst, to get drunk, to enjoy a social occasion (social drinking), to enjoy the taste of an alcoholic beverage, to participate in a religious or traditional ceremony or custom, or because they are alcoholics.

MusicBox: Mapping and visualizing music collections

Watch in High quality: Start the video > roll over the up arrow > click HQ

MusicBox creates a map of musical attributes. A user is able to view their array of music through different qualities such as tempo, timbre and loudness. Unfortunately, this software will not be available any time soon.

The programmer, Anita Lillie, is an MIT graduate who recently started a new job at Nokia. Nokia’s current media offerings include Simulcast – some sort of simulated fishing apparatus, I’m assuming – and Nokia Music, which doesn’t support Firefox.

Lillie will not be releasing the software or code because MIT holds the intellectual property rights.

Facebook Depressed?

Facebook

This may sound like a joke, but it’s not: researchers at Stony Brook University in New York have found that too much Facebook usage can leave you more prone to anxiety and depression…that is, if you’re a teenage girl. In a study, a group of 13-year old girls were evaluated by psychology professor Dr. Joanne Davila and her colleague, Lisa Starr. A year later, the researchers followed up with the girls, testing them for depressive symptoms.

Wait, what? Using Facebook makes you depressed? How am I not dead by my own hands right now? I mean I know that the ads can leave you feeling lonely with the massive attack on your singleness; but, I’ve never been gotten down by Facebook.

Hipster BINGO

Posted by: Nicki
Feb 04 2009 12:00pm

I’m not sure how many of us at WUOG aim to be hipsters, but as a hole, we seem to be pretty good at it. Hipster bingo is ideal for passing the time before shows; I’m thinking all you’d have to do to get the bottom row is step outside the 40 Watt (inside would obviously work too, but then there’s so much less smoking of the Parliaments). In fact, going to most any indie show would probably result in an immediate pwnage of the entire board, but I might just make it my goal to see how many bingos I can get on a daily basis. If you spend any time hanging around the station, this should be even easier than Sarah Palin bingo with all her “mavericks” and “Joe Six Packs.”

But don’t be offended, hipsters- how else are we going to get an American Apparel and for good bands to keep coming to Athens?

Alpha Geeks

There are a dizzying number of cool new services, applications, and gadgets available to citizens of the world today. New stuff is coming out all the time and it can be hard for us Internet experts to keep up, let alone average human beings. For example, my dad — no Internet slouch — had no idea what Hulu was. How is he expected to care about the difference between Twitter or identi.ca?

I take a generally pessimistic view of new sites, assuming that I’ll either not like them, or they won’t stick around long enough for me to appreciate them. I have a few friends who are compulsive signer-uppers, gladly agreeing to the Terms of Service for any new site that comes along. One of these guys does it specifically so he can claim his preferred username, lest some other Internet a-hole tarnish his good handle. Another friend signs up for stuff with the expectation that he’ll actually use the service being offered. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn’t.

How many of us fall into one of these same patterns? I’m rather saddened to notify you that I probably have an account on well over 100 social networks/tools. Yeah… I’m on/was on Plurk, Jaiku (RIP), Twitter, Identi.ca and Pownce (RIP). I loved them all yet I only update Twitter now.

Worried about the impending collapse of the internet? Me too. That’s why I’ve begun stockpiling hours of youTube for purposes of repopulating youTube after the Internet is restored. Here’s how.

Put youTube videos on your hard drive, easily save youTube videos

It will save your favorite youTube videos to your hard drive. Together, we can rebuild the Internet in the event that we accidentally the whole Internet.

Google Sea?

Google earth will begin showing parts of the sea-bed and underwater views of the earth. I loved the Oceanic portions of planet earth and I really hope that this lets users explore the depths in a similar fashion in our own free time.

Google has already conquered the land with Google Earth, but they’re getting ready to continue charting the earth by delving into the ocean. The new portions of Google Earth are expected to show views of the ocean and parts of seabed.
