Top 5 Movies of ‘08

5. Burn After Reading
4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
3. Wall-e
2. The Dark Knight
1. Slumdog Millionaire

Honorable Mentions: Milk, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Tropic Thunder

Yet to see: Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, Revolutionary Road, Doubt, and some documentaries.

But honestly, past the number 2, there weren’t great movies as there were last year. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a film I got a giant problem with: closing in on a 3 hour time frame with pointless and flow-breaking scenes. That being said, numbers 1 and 2 are absolutely phenomenal. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that there’s a huge gap between number 2 and 3.

I have yet to see Milk, although I really want to. Rachel Getting Married was pretty good; it was a very different approach to making a film, scenes were slow drawn out, not much of a plot, just a bunch of random scenes from a wedding. Even though it seems like those things would detract from most movies, it really didn’t from Rachel Getting Married.

I really want to see the Wrestler. It wasn’t playing at any theaters back home so I couldn’t go over break.

Wall-E was pretty damn good. Not only was it as close to a Phillip K. Dick novel that a disney movie will ever get, but it was visually stunning. If they’d been able to make the movie they wanted (the dystopic, robot centric, story) and leave the people out of it, it would’ve been better, but they have to appeal to children. And children like wobbly fat people.
